Coldwater, Michigan – May 18, 2018 –Smokey’s Gardens announced today it is introducing 31 new daylily hybrids for the 2018 season. These latest newcomers will join the hundreds of varieties Smokey’s has created over the last several years.

Smokey’s Background

Presently located in Coldwater, Michigan, Smokey’s Gardens history began in Indiana over ten years ago. Initially started by the owners of a fireplace company as a secondary business to supplement income during the summer months, Smokey’s quickly became one of the world’s largest daylily growers.  With over 70 acres of daylilies, a core focus at Smokey’s Gardens has been to create exceptional hybrids for daylily enthusiasts.

Initial Hybridization

Smokey’s started developing genetically unique daylily varieties through hybridization in 2008. Mixing various cultivars, Smokey’s achieved new plant diversification that highlights the finest qualities of the parent plants. After plenty of trial and error, the company took their hybridization endeavors forward.

Over the years, Smokey’s team has combined general knowledge of plant genetics, cleverness, and patience in the development of their new varieties. With numerous prize-winning specimens to their credit, those key ingredients have proven the perfect mix for Smokey’s.

Smokey’s Current Hybridization Program

Although the company produces thousands of seedlings every year, only one in three hundred varieties are submitted for registration with the AHS (American Hemerocallis Society). Because only the elite are considered for AHS registration, the hybridizing begins with high-quality parent plants. The team has become very adept at choosing flowers with superior genetics and produced extraordinary daylilies that are revered as top-notch treasures.

AHS Registration

Registration with the AHS allows Smokey’s to name their new varieties.  And with names like Blueberry Sauce and Tooth Fairy Pillow, it is evident that these latest hybrids are standouts. The creative and often witty and quirky names only serve to complement and highlight each distinctive flower’s attributes.

With these 2018 hybrids, Smokey’s Gardens continues to remain true to its company mantra: To do things others won’t do so that one day they can do things others can’t do.
