This past weekend was a perfect reflection of the transition from the cold, gray of winter to a view of the beautiful days that will be coming now with some regularity. Saturday it was in the 50’s and sunny here in southern Michigan. It was the ideal opportunity to get outside and weed, rake and just prepare the garden for the summer. Enter Sunday. The day began with driven rain coming down with and a ground covered with sleet. It was a good day to stay indoors and celebrate the fact that the timing had been perfect the day before, have a cup of tea, and enjoy the work that was done. Then there was Monday morning. That day did, in fact, begin with a layer of snow covering everything. The best part was that it didn’t last long because the sun came out again and by noon there was no snow to be found. Welcome to the fickle early days of spring.
As we prepare for the 2019 season one of the many projects completed over the winter was the addition of a greenhouse. This 12 foot by 40 foot shelter is going to make it easier to step up our hybridizing game in an effort to provide you with even more options for you to choose your daylilies. While it currently has tropical plants and vegetables (Why not!) there will be activity within the space year-round.
If you saw the circular garden’s beginnings last week you will see that there is now a better definition to the design. It is still in the beginning stages but will be a unique addition to the many daylilies and individual gardens we already have. We have closed the road next to this garden as it is no longer needed for access.
As you can see from the photos there is little change from last week, the daylilies are carefully emerging from the ground before they begin their growth spurt. (Notice the snow remaining on the ground). With about two weeks to go before “opening day” everything is just where it should be.
